I’m a regular contributor to performance testing discussion groups and user forums on the Internet. As a member of various LinkedIn and Google Groups, I often get “reminder” emails inviting me to read new content in these groups.  I’m often amazed at just how keen some people are to demonstrate their lack of proficiency in a test tool.  People often ask the most rudimentary questions, demonstrating a fundamental lack of knowledge.

Over the pond, America is gearing up for Thanksgiving and their online retailers are preparing for their busiest weekend of the year. In common with America, in the UK there is a significant shift away from bricks and mortar retailers, towards online shopping. Visa Europe has already dubbed 2nd December “Mega Monday” and anticipates £450m of online spending on that day (£5,208 per second).

Regular readers of this blog will be aware that here at Trust IV, we’re passionate about web performance. If we spot a poorly performing website, it makes our blood boil. We know that there is rarely a good excuse for poor performance (provided that you know where to look for bottlenecks).

Last week saw the unveiling of the highly anticipated clothing line of French fashion designer Isabel Marant.  In a collaboration with high street retailer H&M, many fans were left disappointed when H&M's website crashed due to load.

According to recent news articles, such the Guardian’s “UK retailers ready for record online sales this Christmas”, or ComputerWeekly’s “Online retail spend reaches record high as Christmas approaches”, UK retailers are expecting record sales through their online channels this year.

I wrote an article about the delays faced by customers trying to buy tickets for Glasgow 2014 during the first round of ticket sales in August. Many visitors to the site faced delays of up to an hour trying to buy tickets. I decided against publishing the article at the time, as I didn’t feel it was that newsworthy.

DARPA recently announced a new Grand Challenge in Cyber security. They're challenging competitors to develop self-healing software that can patch security vulnerabilities automatically, and there's a $2 million prize at stake.

It's only open to US organisations, so Trust IV aren't allowed to enter.
